Current Programs
The WEE society is currently involved in a number of programs to support local women. These include:
Women Unlimited
Women Unlimited is a 3-year project designed to assist unemployed women in the HRM and in Lunenburg and Queens Counties prepare for, obtain and maintain employment in the fields of trades or technology. Located at the Nova Scotia Community College IT Campus in Halifax, the Akerley Campus in Dartmouth and in the Lunenburg Campus in Bridgewater, this innovative project is designed to support up to 65 women a year to find their places in the labour market. Women Unlimited works to address the systemic barriers women face and to support their successful transition into trades and technology training programs and workplaces.
IT Works for All Women
This program provides computer skills training to women who live in the rural and urban areas of the HRM. Two community developers work with women at local C@P sites and community centres from Hubbards to Halifax and from Dartmouth to Sheet Harbour. IT Works for All Women also offers free sessions to help women prepare to write the GED.
Women Unlimited, Cape Breton
Through this project, we are developing a Women Unlimited program model in Cape Breton. Working with local women, women’s organizations, equity groups, governments, unions and NSCC, a community developer is investigating the needs of both women and employers throughout Cape Breton.
IT Works for Women - Guysborough
This program supports the women who live in the Municipality of the District of Guysborough, the Towns of Mulgrave and Canso, the Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s and in adjacent communities in Antigonish County, as they gain new computer and employability skills.
The NOW Project
The NOW Project will offer 24 diverse women who are dependant on Income Assistance and face barriers to employment, the opportunity to participate in a full-time, 28-week program. NOW is designed to build upon their life and employability skills and to assist them in applying those skills during community-based work experiences with local employers.
As well, it is designed to decrease their barriers to employment and support their successful transition into the labour market. Located in Dartmouth, this women-centred program will take place over two phases. The first phase will offer participants 14-weeks of life and employability skills, through a combination of workshops in personal development, employability skills and job preparation and computer skills. A GED preparation program will also be provided for those interested in participating. The second phase will include 14-weeks of supportive work experience with local employers, as well as employability skills workshops and mentoring opportunities.
