Community-based Economic Development Links

The Black Business Initiative (BBI)

This initiative provides a province-wide business development services-from assistance in marketing, to budgeting, to securing funding-to the Black business community.

Calmeadow

A non-profit organization with a mission to provide access to credit for those developing small or micro businesses.

Canadian Rural Partnerships

A federally-sponsored agency that funds community-based solutions that improve the quality of life for Canadians living in rural and remote areas of our country

The Centre for Community-Enterprise

Operating from the west coast, this organization has published many works on CED in Canada. These can be purchased on line through this site.

The Centre for Community Economic Development Technical Assistance Program (CEDTAP)

Based from Carleton University, with coordinators in each region, this organization has a mandate to give technical assistance for community-based work across Canada.

The Centre for Women in Business

Housed at Mount St. Vincent University, the Centre offers programs, services, and networking opportunities for women who are starting or running their own businesses.

The Coady International Institute

Housed at St. Francis Xavier University, the Institute was developed as a centre for excellence in community-based development. They offers a variety of diploma and certificate programs in community development.

Coastal Communities Network (CCN)

This is a voluntary association of organizations with a mission of advancing ‘the survival and development of Nova Scotia’s coastal and rural communities’. This web site offers their current newsletter on-line, as well as a host of other resource materials of interest to CED workers.

Community Access Program (C@P)

A federal initiative that aims to provide Canadians with affordable public access to the Internet and the skills they need to use it effectively.

Habitat for Humanity

A nonprofit organization with a mandate to build simple, decent, affordable houses in partnership with those in need of adequate shelter. The Canadian web site indicates 89 starts in Canada this year. The general web site gives much more information about their focus and their international work.

LETS Toronto

LETS is short for Local Exchange and Trading Society. It is a bartering system which is operating in four cities in Canada. The largest is found in Peterborough. If you’re interested in finding out more, check out their web site. This is an interesting look at the development of an alternative economy.

The Entrepreneurs with Disabilities Network (EDN)

This site is of interest to entrepreneurs with disabilities. It includes links to some good resources and is directed at small and/or home-based businesses.
